The popular Artist in Residence series will begin again on Wednesday, October 13th at 6:30pm with featured guest Gary Carter, in partnership with Cowboy Artists of America.
In 1982 Gary Carter was accepted as a member of the prestigious Cowboy Artists of America and in 1986, he served as the organization's president. Carter's favorite subjects to paint include the contemporary and historic American West, from mountain men and Indians to modern-day working cowboys to elk, grizzlies, and cattle drives. He also has an affinity for trains. The iron horses of yesteryear often find their way onto the canvas. Carter's superb use of lighting is key to enjoying his oils.
Staying true to the heritage of his predecessors, he makes certain that the accuracy of his work remains a high priority. He participates in ranch activities, attends mountain men rendezvous, and is an enthusiastic reader. Carter says "...if you're painting something they don't think is right," he says of his cowboy subjects "they're going to tell you." Carter's work always tells dramatic, exciting stories that are highlighted by the often humorous, carefully crafted titles.
Educated at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles, Carter graduated with honors in 1971 and began his fine art career in 1973 with a sellout one-man show in Tucson. He lives in Montana near the west entrance of Yellowstone National Park with his wife, Marlys. He purposely chooses this locale for its pristine beauty and the wildlife in the surrounding national forests. In 1991, he was officially adopted into the Crow tribe and was welcomed into the Big Lodge Clan of the Real Bird Family.
Carter will mingle with guests during a pre-dinner wine reception and then will take art lovers on a fascinating journey as he shares stories about his images of the American West during a four-course dinner of artful American cuisine paired with wines. $99 per person including tax and gratuity. Reservations required, please call 602 955-7878 for seats to this special event.
